Yemen, with a population of almost 30 million, is suffering from the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and has for been a long time. Civil conflict began in 2014 and the situation has been deteriorating ever since. Over 80% of the population currently requires humanitarian assistance and protection and 16 million are food insecure. The statistics are staggering, over 3 million have been displaced by conflict, almost 18 million need water and sanitation facilities and 19.7 million are without basic healthcare. The onslaught of coronavirus and the ensuing reduction of foreign aid along with six years of war has…

On December 12th 2006, in the largest single worksite enforcement action in American history, ICE swept through six Swift & Co. meat processing plants across six states. By the end of the day, 1300 undocumented workers had been arrested, amounting to roughly 10% of Swift’s workforce. After the raids some workers refused to return to work, it was estimated that at the time that almost a quarter of Swift’s workforce were undocumented immigrants and to remain open after the raids, Swift & Co. had to raise wages by 8%.

Historically, a large portion of meat-processing plants and slaughterhouses labourers have…

At seventeen I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. Having just returned from a solo birthday trip to volunteer on a reserve in South Africa, all I knew I wanted to do was travel. So when it came to applying to universities, I looked abroad and in doing so I found liberal arts courses. Courses that allowed you to pick and choose different courses and electives rather than sticking to just one topic. Unfortunately, these courses either came with the ridiculous expenses of American colleges or the requirement of a maths A-Level in the Netherlands…

At its base, ideologies are a collection of ideals and beliefs, and are generally applied to political theory. Ideologies are not just a result of theoretical politics, they also impact politics in practice, through an intricate relationship. There are many different ideologies, the most common being conservatism, liberalism and socialism, but also other groups such as feminism, environmentalism, neo-liberalism and capitalism. All of the ideologies affect politics in different ways and some only affect politics in response to each other but all are important in understanding the workings of politics.

Conservatism, liberalism and socialism, are also the three broad traditions…

Extinction Rebellion made three major demands and on May 1 Parliament met one of these demands, declaring an environment and climate emergency. With recent reports of Venice flooding and Australia and California burning up in forest fires there’s no denying we truly are facing an emergency. Climate change is nothing new though and the science has been around for years, the politics just hasn’t been there to back it up. With role models like Greta Thunberg and whole generations showing out in force at protests, the politicians and corporations can no longer ignore the issue we are all facing.

When…

Every morning I wake up in a heated house and go downstairs to a kitchen stocked with clean running water and a variety of fresh foods to meet my daily nutritional needs (with surplus). I shower with hot water and spend the rest of the day online with not a single thought to how much internet or electricity I’m using. There aren’t many days I think of how extremely lucky I am but compared to so many people around the world I have an unfathomable wealth, an unfathomable ease to my life. There are so many simple every-day things that…

Environmental damage is a prominent threat to society in the twenty-first century. The World Health Organisation claims environmental risks contribute to almost a quarter of deaths each year (World Health Organisation, 2016). There are various approaches to tackling these problems such as international agreements and domestic law, but some believe that it is not just states, but also corporations, that have a responsibility to remedy them. Corporate social responsibility could be interpreted as corporations recognising and responding to this demand of society, or as others believe it could just be corporations recognising and responding to criticism that could hinder profits…

Environmental problems are transboundary and incredibly complex, and as a result can often not be resolved with unilateral agreements alone (Enuka, 2019). There are significant obstacles in reaching the co-operation required for multilateral agreements though. These obstacles can be understood and challenged through three analytical frameworks: national interest, contention over knowledge and values, and contention over the prioritisation of either development or sustainability (Brown, 2019c). These frameworks assess the factors influencing either international division or cooperation when it comes to environmental issues. …

Scientific and economic arguments are crucial to political debates on what can be done in response to the ever-increasing issue of climate change. To solve such an issue requires an accurate diagnosis or policies will fail which is why scientific research and the voice of the scientific community is necessary for understanding the issues of climate change as well as their urgency. However, science isn’t the only influence on politics, and policies have to be economically viable and sustainable to reach agreement and implementation. Economic research, like the Stern Review (Johnson and Dawson, 2019) is therefore very important in why…

Politics is “an essentially contestable concept” (Gallie, 1956) and as such has many definitions. Some could argue that politics is not objectively definable however to understand what politics signifies, it is important to engage with all the possible theories and definitions of politics. Although, these definitions are all distinct, they all must come with the acknowledgement of certain questions such as what politics is, where it is done and who can, should and does do it.

Most theorists take on either a narrow or broad definition of politics, either viewing it as something related to the state, or in a…
